In Aberdeen, Washington, high school teacher David McKay sought a way to engage his students in high quality writing. He felt that writing for a professional publication and an authentic audience would be highly motivating. He and his students chose to explore the long standing football rivalry between Hoquim and Aberdeen High Schools and initiated a highly successful series of student produced books. The Thanksgiving Day Football Games: An Oral History Factual Compilation and Pictorial Collection of the Thanksgiving Day Football Games between the Aberdeen Bobcats and the Hoquim Grizzlies was followed by six other titles, each best sellers in the Aberdeen community.
