Experts in creating safer schools visited the Laboratory's National Resource Center for Safe Schools to help plan the recent Partnering for Safer Schools conference in Washington, D.C. The Laboratory's magazine, Northwest Education, was finalist for the 2002 Periodical of the Year by The Association of Educational Publishers. CEO Carol F. Thomas and Associate Executive Director Jerry Kirkpatrick awarded the first Jerry Kirkpatrick Annual Award for Special Achievement to the late Kathleen Cotton (see story). The award was established in honor of Kirkpatrick's 35-year service to the Laboratory.
