Team Leader:
Rebecca Novick, Ph.D researches and writes in the area of early childhood education, with a focus on language and literacy development. Novick has authored a number of articles and publications, including a recent NWREL publication entitled, Many Paths to Literacy: Language, Literature, and Learning in the Primary Classroom. Prior to coming to NWREL, Novick worked as a classroom teacher in a number of Head Start and early intervention programs, and provided parenting education and support for parents involved with a child protection agency.

Maureen Sherry Carr, Ph. D. is a senior research associate at NWREL fcousing on adolescent and young adult literacy development. Dr. Carr has worked with pre-service and in-service teachers at Oregon State University, Western Oregon University and Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon. Her primary focus is middle and high school reading. In addition to experience at the university level, she has taught elementary, middle, and high school students in both private and public schools. Dr. Carr also has experience in clinical settings working with adults whose language skills were affected through stroke and head trauma.

Jana Potter holds a master's degree in International Intercultural Development Education from Florida State University. She is currently conducting a case study of the implementation of school wide literacy programs in two elementary schools. Ms. Potter has planned and implemented collaborative meetings of regional educational leadership. She coordinated America Reads Challenge work for the network of regional educational laboratories.

Amy Fisher Stuczynski earned a Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a concentration on Children, Youth, and Families. She is researching and writing publications and training manuals on Language and Literacy Development with emphases on the education of Native American children and on education and social class.

Diane Dorfman has an M.A. and Ph.D. in cultural anthropology. Areas of focus on the Language and Literacy team include bilingual/bicultural education, family literacy, Hispanic and Native American/Alaska Native education .
