Marcus and Abby: Homework Help in Out-of-School Time
About Marcus:
A fifth-grader who attends his local elementary school and walks three blocks every day to an after-school program at a community center. Marcus's teacher told the program coordinator that he has some difficulty managing his assignments and comprehending non-fiction texts. Sometimes his homework assignments are too difficult for him to complete, causing him to feel frustrated.
As you work through the sample tutoring sessions you can add information and resources to your tote bag.
About Abby: A college student who is participating in a Learn & Serve America Higher Ed Program. As part of a credit course based on the principles of service-learning, she is tutoring at a local after-school program. In class, she has regular opportunities to share and reflect on her tutoring experience with her team. This is her first experience working with a student in an after-school setting and she is looking forward to discovering how she can help Marcus improve.
Tutoring Challenge: Abby must determine how she can best help Marcus during their tutoring sessions, helping him organize his assignments and strengthen his non-fiction reading. She'll have to decide how to help with these skills while addressing other pressing issues that come up during their sessions.
Working with upper elementary-grade students
Working with students older than third grade can be more complex and challenging than working with younger students. More about upper elementary-grade students!About the Planner: This is where Abby keeps notes about her tutoring sessions with Marcus. Abby records information to help plan future sessions and to gauge Marcus's progress. She also uses the planner to take notes on what she observes about Marcus and what She'd still like to learn about him.
