Mathematics Summer Institute 2008 for Grades 3–5 (Spokane, WA)

Overview

This institute will engage teachers in a variety of activities to deepen their understanding of the integration of arithmetic and algebra in the elementary classroom. Activities include:

  • Engaging in mathematics
  • Analyzing video clips and examples of student work
  • Reading and discussing articles
  • Investigating research about understanding children’s thinking about mathematics

The Institute will explore the following:

  • Using Relational Thinking
  • Understanding Equality
  • Representing Conjectures

Materials

Participants will receive a copy of Thinking Mathematically: Integrating Arithmetic & Algebra in Elementary School (Carpenter, Franke, & Levi), Young Mathematicians at Work, Constructing Multiplication and Division, (Fosnot & Dolk) and an institute binder with supporting materials and journal articles.
