The Lewis and Clark Expedition
When they got to the long narrows of Celilo Falls the water boiled and
whirled All of the Indians were lined up waiting for the white men to fall.
However they did not. The rapids that they were traveling through were class B,
meaning that it could not be run even in a modern canoe specially designed for
whitewater.
They had a meeting with two chiefs and 15 Indians and later on there was a
peace medal found in Wishram. Lewis and Clark ate their first wappato and
steelhead here. Clark was quoted when saying, "that was one of the most
delicious fish I have ever tasted". There were many Indians that came from east
to west to trade in Wishram. Wishram natives traded dried fish packed in big
baskets. They traded for buffalo and horses from the east. And they traded for
otter furs and shells from the west.

Wishram Past
Wishram used to be a big railroad town. Almost all the houses were built by
the railroad. There were lots of jobs, a store, and a barbershop. Then the
railroad didn't have as much to do here. Now there are some empty
buildings.
Past
It was very hard to work back then. Hard: it was hard because you had no
machines.
In the past they built canoes good: You didn't have to use all your energy
but you had to use your arms to paddle.
In the past they're were more people in Wishram. One book said there were
3,000 Indians living here.
In the past they traded a lot with other Indian tribes.

Present
Wishram School is in Washington by the Columbia River. It has no stores but
it has one school it is kind of big but not a lot of people. There are
computers to use. They flooded the water by building a dam.

Wishram Present
Wishram is by the Columbia River. There are rocky cliffs and grass. It
doesn't rain much here. It is not in the summer. Sometimes it snows a little
bit in the winter.
Our town is very small. The school has about sixty students. It goes from
pre-school to grade 12. This year we don't have anyone in grade 12.
We like our little town.

Wishram in the future
Wishram more than likely won't grow except on the heights and if the
railroad sells the land to the east. There will be a possible chance of a
restaurant and a store.
We know 2 good future wind surfing places on the Washington side. Right now
it is a popular swimming hole. I go swimming there every once in a while.
I would like Wishram to stay the same as it is now. If something does
happen, I would like somebody to put in a skate park or a better park.
