Rediscovering Coyote and Raven:
The Ancient Art of Spirit Masks Moves into the Digital Age
At Tri-Valley School in Healy, Alaska, middle schoolers are researching animal symbolism, designing three-dimensional masks with computer graphics programs and making and editing digital movies of their mask making explorations. Students study animal symbolism in traditional cultures around the world, writing essays on their favorites and recounting the folktales the masks represent. Throughout the project, students write in an online journal, responding to teacher prompts and documenting their learning.
