The Roots of Nikiski:
Alaskan Students Discover Their Heritage and Leave a Legacy of Their Own
In Nikiski, Alaska, on the Kenai Peninsula, middle school students engaged in an interdisciplinary project bridging social studies, language arts, science, and math to produce a seventy page community history, Away from Almost Anything Else: An Interdisciplinary Study of Nikiski. Teachers saw the community study as an opportunity for students to learn about the heritage of their unique town and gain some appreciation for the environment in which they live, while collecting oral histories and exploring poetry and scientific writing.
