"I Am a Poet!": Transforming Students into Writers in a Small Alaska School

At Kenny Lake School in rural Copper Creek, Alaska, teacher Tamara Van Wyhe's classroom is packed with great literature...by literary greats as well as her students' own work. Through wide reading, students discover favorite authors and "shadow" the styles and structure of the literature they read, analyzing how the author put the piece together and writing their own content within the same structure. Student work evolves as students develop their skills, confidence and voices. Their work is published annually in an anthology.
