Title
Design Studio: Creating and Sustaining Smaller Learning Communities Where All Students Achieve
Date and Location(s)
May 2-4, 2007
Noble High School
North Berwick, ME

Description

What will you see when you visit Noble?
Visitors to Noble High School will see evidence of effective teaching and learning teams. Students and teachers at NHS are members of heterogeneous grade level teams 9-12. Our school is divided into 3 vertical learning academies. Students stay on the same academy for 4 years. Teams of teachers have common planning and teaching time in order to collaborate in support of students and develop interdisciplinary curriculum. Our SLC's are committed to delivering rigorous, authentic curriculum to all students and differentiating to meet the needs of diverse learners. Visitors will see project based learning, portfolio assessments, block scheduling, and personalization. In three days at Noble you will experience our strong sense of community, and collaborative, risk taking culture. Visitors will also realize that Noble, like any other school, is a work in progress. We are constantly reflecting on our successes and challenges as we work to better serve our students.
Who should visit Noble?
A visit to Noble may be useful to any team looking to see effective, sustainable and deeply embedded smaller learning communities. We began teaming at NHS 16 years ago. Participation in the SLC project has helped us strengthen and further imbed personalization into our practice. While we are a rural, largely white school, we believe learning about our practices can inform other schools regardless of size, demographics or location. Our hope for Design Studio participants is not that you will adopt our practices, but that seeing the way we have implemented SLC's will help you move forward with your own SLC work.

Participants will benefit from an interactive multi-day workshop that includes action planning, observations of classes, interviews with staff members and students, and networking with other high schools.
