Montclair High School
Choice and Voice

Offering choices to students has been part of this district's philosophy for more than 25 years. From kindergarten through middle school, parents can enroll their children in any of the district's schools. In high school, course enrollment is "open," allowing any student to sign up for any course. Once in the course, students can opt for more rigorous work, maximizing the challenges the course provides. Student achievement at this self-selected higher level is then recognized on students' transcripts.

So it is not a surprise that choice has come to be at the heart of the high school's SLC development. Enrolling in an SLC for part of the school day is a choice that lets students partake of innovative courses while spending the rest of their day in the "regular" high school structure.
