Brockton High School
Bridging the Minority Achievement Gap

The 2002 MCAS scores indicate that Brockton High School has demonstrated significant success in bridging the minority achievement gap in English/language arts, especially as compared against state figures. Brockton had a 13 percent overall failure rate in English/language arts; the state failure rate was 14 percent. The failure rate for African American students at Brockton was 14 percent, whereas the state failure rate for African American students was 33 percent.

Brockton is also making progress in bridging the achievement gap by moving students into the advanced and proficient levels on the MCAS. Sixty-three percent of Brockton students reached those categories; state figures indicate 59 percent of students in those categories. Forty-seven percent of Brockton High's African American students are in the advanced and proficient categories, while 31 percent of African American students statewide have reached the advanced and proficient categories.
