September 1996 Writing Assessment Institutes Coming Up Soon
Several four-day institutes on how to more effectively teach and assess writing are scheduled for fall and winter. Participants will be introduced to the six traits of effective writing: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, fluency, and conventions. They then will examine diverse samples of student writing and explore proven classroom strategies for teaching the traits as a powerful tool for revision.Said one recent institute participant from Columbia, South Carolina: "I entered the workshop as one type of teacher, and I am leaving as another-more committed, more enlightened, and excited about assessing all those mounds of compositions."
The institutes will be held:
A $475 per person registration fee includes registration, breakfast, light lunch, and a complete set of training and resource materials. A 10 percent discount is available for those who register 30 days in advance. Graduate credit is available through Portland State University.
- October 8-11 and October 22-25 at Cannon Beach, Oregon
- December 3-6 at Santa Fe, New Mexico
- February 25-28 at Charleston, South Carolina
