September/October 2001 | NW REPORT Awards FundNational Service Projects The Laboratory's Education, Career, and Community Program (ECC) will receive nearly $10 million during the next three years to expand its work on behalf of the Corporation for National Service. In partnership with Bank Street College of Education in New York, the Laboratory will redesign the national training program that is in place for AmeriCorps*VISTA’s some 10,000 members and field supervisors. AmeriCorps*VISTA helps to build sustainable community-based programs to combat poverty. AmeriCorps*VISTA Integrated National Training Program involves redesigning three three-day training programs for preservice VISTA trainees, early service members, and field supervisors. Initial funding is $2.6 million for the first 15 months. Organized regionally, the training programs will be systemized to eliminate duplication and implement consistent curricula and instructional methods nationwide, says ECC Unit Manager Nancy Henry. The ECC Program has coordinated the AmeriCorps Network Northwest Consortium for the past six years, currently assisting national service programs in Oregon and Washington. The recent award continues this work, providing initial funding of $100,000. The award also extends funding for LEARNS, a Corporation for National Service project coordinated by the ECC Program for the past three years. LEARNS supports the work of education-focused national service programs—AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, Learn and Serve, and others—by providing staff training, technical assistance, materials, and products. Services typically focus on mentoring, tutoring, and literacy, and the recent award also addresses out-of-school time projects. Initial funding is $1 million for the first year. An award from the Texas Workforce Commission funds the new project, Mentor TEXAS! In partnership with the Texas Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service Governor’s Mentoring Initiative, ECC staff will provide free training and technical assistance to mentoring programs throughout Texas. More information, resources, and expert assistance is available from the project Web site: www.mentortexas.org. |
