Secretary Riley To Speak at Conference


U .S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley will be the keynote speaker at the U.S. Department of Education’s 1998 Improving America’s Schools Western Regional Conference. Hosted by NWREL, the conference will be held in Portland October 19-21 and is the first of the Department’s three regional fall conferences.

In his address, Riley will discuss the Department’s priorities and new initiatives for the 21st century. Joining him will be senior leadership from the Department, including Judith Heumann, Kent McGuire, Patricia McNeil, Delia Pompa, Linda Roberts, and Gerald Tirozzi. Other speakers include Dr. Milton Bennett, Codirector of the Intercultural Communication Institute in Portland, and Dr. Hugh Burkett, Superintendent of the Clover Park School District in Washington state.

The conference is designed to benefit a host of participants, ranging from teachers and principals to state education officials and grant administrators. At program workshops, conference participants will be able to network with Department officials and federally sponsored technical assistance providers. Workshop topics include:

The conference will be held at the DoubleTree Hotels at Jantzen Beach and the Columbia River. Conference fees are $240 for individuals and $200 for those registering together in a group of four or more from the same agency.
