What's New on NWREL's Web Site

You Asked for It; You Got It. Each year the Laboratory fields thousands of requests for information. During the past year and a half, the most frequent questions on a topic were targeted for "By Request," a quarterly booklet series. These reports, briefly addressing current educational concerns and issues, contain a discussion of research and literature pertinent to the issue, a sampling of how Northwest schools are addressing the issue, suggestions for adapting these ideas to schools, selected references, and contact information. The series is now available online (http://www.nwrel.org/request/) with the first five titles: Alternative Schools: Approaches for Students at Risk; Grade Configuration: Who Goes Where?; Scheduling Alternatives: Options for Student Success; Tutoring: Strategies for Successful Learning; and Service Learning in the Northwest Region.

Networking News. A Guide to Networking for K-12 Schools (http://www.netc.org/network_guide/), published by the Laboratory’s Northwest Educational Technology Consortium from a project of the Washington Office of Public Instruction, aims to help schools in designing a school network to meet teaching, learning, and administrative needs. The guide focuses on the initial steps in the networking process and reviews planning considerations and network design issues facing educators who need to make intelligent decisions about evolving technologies.

By the Way: Bylaws for Parent Committees. Model Title IX parent committee bylaws are online in Postscript Document Format (Adobe Acrobat) though the Laboratory’s Comprehensive Center home pages. Four models, geared to different settings, feature ideas and recommendations for Title IX parent committees to consider adopting for effective operation. (http://www.nwrac.org/links/grant/)

NWREL’s Site Named in Top 10 for Equity. The Women’s Educational Equity Act (WEEA) Program has chosen the Laboratory’s Web site as one of its top 10 sites in terms of gender equity and education. "We thank you for being a good example of how the Internet should work in more than just the technical ways," says WEEA in the letter of notification of the award.
