Lab Founder,
Lawrence Fish Dies

by Jerry Kirkpatrick Lawrence Fish

Dr. Lawrence D. Fish, founding executive director of NWREL, passed away in September at his home in Charbonneau, Oregon. At 82, he was still golfing and lunching with friends right up to the end. A true visionary, he helped create the Regional Educational Laboratories in the 1960s. The mission and concepts Fish put forth in the founding of NWREL continue to guide us.

He was an amazing person in so many ways. He was superintendent of the Lake Oswego School District when it was featured by Parade magazine as one of the country’s 20 best school districts. He was on Ralph Edward’s TV show, "This Is Your Life," when it featured his son as a Vietnam war hero. And when everyone else’s golf tee shot landed in the pond, his hit the water and skipped to land on solid ground. Everyone who knew him thought of him as a friend, and many, many people will miss him.
