Two New Lab Web Pages Focus on School Reform

Two new, related, and highly useful school-reform pages have been added to the Laboratory’s Web site.

The U.S. Department of Education, Office of Educational Research and Improvement, has designated the Northwest Laboratory to lead the National Specialty in School Change. The specialty now has a Web page telling about work in the school-change specialty area, bringing people and organizations together to improve the results of the school-change process. The address is http://www.nwrel.org/scpd/re-engineering/.

One of the main features of the page is its electronic access to the new Laboratory-developed Catalog of School Reform Models. The electronic Catalog is available in PDF (Portable Document Format), which preserves document format while the document is being printed, and has hypertext versions with links to Web sites maintained by the models. The Catalog describes 44 models—26 entire-school models and 18 skill-and-subject models—which schools may want to consider as they develop proposals for funding under the new federal Comprehensive School Reform Demonstration program being carried out by state departments of education.

You will also find a link to the Catalog on the other new Web page for the Laboratory’s Comprehensive School Reform Demonstration (CSRD) project. The project is assisting Northwest states and schools as they work to implement comprehensive school reform to improve student achievement through reorganizing and revitalizing entire schools, rather than implementing isolated programs. Visit this page, which has a link to the U.S. Department of Education’s CSRD program page, at http://www.nwrel.org/csrdp/.
