"Reading is the Key to the World," Says Volunteer Center Director

"I can’t think of a more satisfying or worthwhile endeavor than opening up the world of reading to all schoolchildren," says Dr. Kay Davis, Director of the Laboratory’s new Community and Education Volunteer Services Center. "The America Reads Challenge will help ensure that no child is left behind as the new millennium brings ever more challenges and demands to the community and the workplace. Reading is really the key to the world."

Davis comes to the Laboratory from Clackamas Community College (CCC) in Oregon City, where she was Associate Dean of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in education from Oregon State University, an M.A.T. in liberal studies from Lewis & Clark College, and a B.A. in English with a TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) certificate from Portland State University.

Davis’ special areas of expertise are reading, language acquisition, and ESL. In the 1970s, she designed and implemented CCC’s English as a Second Language program. Davis has also designed English-language programs in Mexico. She has made numerous presentations, conducted training workshops, and written publications on topics related to teaching reading. She has been a Fulbright professor, teaching language acquisition, ESL methodology, and reading methodology at universities in Costa Rica and Panama. She was also an English teaching fellow at the Pedagogical University in Slovakia.
