Flashback

Rural Education Director—Dr. Joyce Ley has been named Director of NWREL’s Rural Education Program. Ley brings 30 years of experience in the education field to her new post, including 10 years in the classroom. Before joining the Laboratory as a researcher nearly a decade ago, Ley held positions at Montana State University, the Montana Education Association, and several Montana and Washington schools. Ley’s predecessor, Dr. Steve Nelson, will replace Dr. Rex Hagans as Director of Planning and Program Development when Hagans retires in December.

Middle School Conference—Walt Grebing (left), President of the National Middle School Association, was keynote speaker at NWREL’s conference, "In the Middle," which drew 400 participants to Portland in early May. Grebing, a middle school principal for nearly a quarter century, spoke about community-based learning for middle schoolers. Student Andrew Steward from Houck Middle School in Salem, Oregon, shared his service-learning experience with conference participants. Houck has developed service-learning projects as a key element of its integrated school curriculum.
