March/April 2001 | NW REPORT Flashback U.S. Congressman David Wu Visits LabCongressman David Wu held a press conference at NWREL to announce his proposed legislation to encourage and facilitate senior mentors in schools. The Seniors in Our Schools Act aims to create opportunities and training for senior adults who can offer the benefit of their time, willingness, and life experiences to give young people the additional support they need to succeed in school. Wu was joined by NWREL Executive Director/CEO Dr. Ethel Simon-McWilliams along with representatives from the media and senior citizen and educational agencies.
Data in a Day Diane Dorfman of NWREL's Child and Family Program works with students at Alder Elementary in Fairview, Oregon, as part of Data in a Day, a component of Listening to Student Voices Self-Study Toolkit produced by NWREL's School Improvement Program for the Laboratory Network Program. Listening to Student Voices brings together students, teachers, administrators, parents, and community members to identify student needs and collaboratively develop school-based strategies to address those needs.
Kwethluk Signs On As Partner SiteStudents and teachers at Kwethluk Community School in Alaska's Lower Kuskokwim School District, one of the Laboratory's partner sites, will collaborate with Laboratory staff on school improvement initiatives. |
