March/April 2001 | NW REPORT Performance In today's increasingly diverse classrooms, students' cultural backgrounds, home languages, and ways of learning can vary a great deal. Teachers will want to use a variety of instructional and assessment strategies that respect and build on these differences. By enabling language minority students to demonstrate their understanding and skills in multiple ways, performance assessments are important tools for obtaining a more complete picture of students' progress and areas of need. To help educators identify effective performance assessment resources, the Laboratory's Assessment Program has updated its Bibliography on Assessment: English Language Learners, a 43-page annotated bibliography of nearly 100 databases, assessments, books, handouts, journal articles, papers, reports, and Web sites on timely assessment topics and their application for English language learners. Northwest region educators can borrow many of the articles and instruments free from the NWREL Assessment Resource Library. Users in other states will be charged a handling fee. For more information, contact Matthew Whitaker at (503) 275-9582 or 1-800-547-6339, ext. 582, or by e-mail, arl@nwrel.org. To order a copy of the Bibliography on Assessment: English Language Learners, please see the NWREL Products Catalog Online.
