February 1998 Conference to Focus on Community Learning
In the Middle, a conference for middle schools that focuses on connecting community-based learning to the classroom and student achievement, will be held in Portland May 4-5.
Sponsored by NWREL’s Education and Work Program, the conference will provide a variety of community-based learning strategies that can help students meet standards and benchmarks through:
- Hands-on preconference workshops
- Thirty interactive sessions organized around topics such as school-to-career, service learning, comprehensive guidance, and thematic learning
- Model programs and study tours
- Tips on how to involve business and community partners
- Keynote speakers who are recognized experts in school-to-work and community involvement
Participants will learn firsthand about successful middle school programs and what makes them work, and exchange materials and ideas that can enhance classroom strategies and techniques. The conference is designed for teachers, counselors, admin- istrators, and others interested in connecting community resources to student learning at the middle school level.
The conference will be held at the DoubleTree Hotel in Portland, with preconference workshops scheduled for Sunday, May 3.
Cost is $200 for individuals and $180 for groups of two or more from the same school. Registration forms will be mailed soon. Watch NWREL’s Reality Check Web site (http://www.nwrel.org/edwork/reality/) for updated information.
