February 1997 Coming Up In '97: Tech Prep, Equity, Writing, "Work Now"
You'll get powerful presentations, dynamic discussions, handy handouts (and maybe even another engraved coffee mug for your collection) at conferences and workshops offered by the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory this year. Events slated for 1997 include:
Unity and Diversity '97: Pathways to Equity, Excellence, and Literacy/Successful Programs and Practices
Date/Location: April 6-8, 1997 (preconference April 5-6)—Red Lion—Lloyd Center, Portland, OR
Description: This conference will feature keynote speakers on current equity issues, concurrent sessions with presenters knowledgeable about programs that work to increase the success of all students, and multiethnic cultural activities. A resource room will display multicultural print and nonprint resources.
Who: Educators who are dedicated to equity in education and the desegregation of public schools.
Cost: $125 for registration received before February 21; $150 after
School-to-Work Transition/Tech Prep 4: Communities Preparing Students for Work and Lifelong Learning
Date/Location: April 22-23, 1997 (preconference April 21)—Convention Center, Spokane, WA
Description: A showcase of educational reform models and pioneering school-to-work initiatives. Conference topics include student assessment, work-based learning, all students, institutional technologies, rural models of school-to-work, systems change, and partnerships.
Who: Educators, administrators, policymakers, and their partners from business, labor, industry, and government.
Cost: $200 for regular two-day registration (postmarked by April 1, 1997); $100 for one-day registration; $300 for late registration (postmarked after April 1); industry tours ($20); study tours ($100). Fees do not include meals or hotel.
Creating Writers: Six-Trait Writing for Assessment and Instruction and Training of Trainers

Description: This institute addresses the overwhelming demand for information and training on the six-trait analytic writing model. The session will examine diverse samples of student writing across six dimensions of performance—ideas, organization, voice, word choice, fluency, and conventions—and explore classroom-proven strategies for teaching these traits as a powerful foundation for revision. Tips for trainers and time to plan are provided, along with a trainer's kit for use in district training sessions.
Who: Those who teach student writers in grades three through 12 to assess writing, or are planning to help others learn to assess and teach writing. Participation in teams by district, school, or grade level is encouraged; however, individual registrations are also welcome.
Cost: $475 per person (includes registration, daily full breakfast, and a complete set of training and resource materials). A 10 percent early-bird discount will be given to those who paid 30 days in advance. Graduate-level college credit is available at no extra cost.
Work Now and in the Future 14
Date/Location: November 3-4, 1997 (preconference November 2)— Oregon Convention Center, Portland, OR
Description: A major regional conference, now in its 14th year, brings together educational practitioners and policymakers with business, industry, labor, and community representatives to explore how to improve our education and training systems and their connections to the world of work. The conference features top-notch presenters delving into key issues affecting the economic and social welfare of the region and nation.
Who: Those who have a stake in preparing youth for the workplace and community and preparing adults for lifelong learning, including local and state policymakers; school board members and trustees; school-to-career leaders; academic and vocational teachers; officials from state and federal agencies; educators from elementary schools to higher education; and representatives from business, labor, and industry.
