The Internet is proving to be an increasingly valuable Laboratory tool to help deliver education information and resources throughout the Northwest and beyond.

It was just three years ago that NWREL launched the first version of its Web site—evolving from a text-only Gopher version to incorporate graphics and color, and then undergoing various improvements to make the material more easily accessible.

The NWREL Web site offers information on the Laboratory’s organization and programs, online versions of NWREL publications and periodicals, and resource links for parents and teaching professionals. The site currently boasts more than 6,000 files of online content.

The entire contents of several Laboratory publications, such as the Catalog of School Reform Models, are available for free on the site, as is each issue of NWREL’s Northwest Education quarterly magazine and Northwest Report newsletter.

Not only are these and other publications available on the Web, the site also contains a searchable database of all current Laboratory publications and provides detailed ordering instructions. Information on upcoming conferences and symposiums can be found here as well. And the site’s Library in the Sky puts a universe of information within your reach.

On these pages we highlight some of the features of this new and improved version of NWREL’s Web site, inviting you to visit—often.

In addition to an updated style with enhanced features offering more convenient access to information and resources, the Web site’s latest incarnation is being used for training and technical assistance support, launches a Spanish-language version of the site, and more fully uses databases for quick retrieval of resources.

More than just a new look with colorful aesthetics, the site has improved navigation options and links, and a quick-search feature at the top of the page. Below the search feature is a listing of the Laboratory’s programs and centers, a fast way to click-and-go.

Come and see.

Program Links—In an effort to reduce mouse clicks, hyper-links are provided on the NWREL home page, allowing instant navigation to the Laboratory’s five programs and five centers. En Español—A Spanish version of NWREL’s home page can be accessed with a click of the mouse. The Web site also now offers Spanish alternatives to many of its documents. Contact Information—NWREL’s mailing address, telephone number, and e-mail address have been added to the bottom of every Web document.

Organization—This section describes NWREL’s mission, introduces its board and staff, and provides location information. Also included is information about the five states in NWREL’s region.

What’s New—This section contains update information, vacancy announcements, and a database of upcoming events.

Resources—Links to NWREL products and publications, events, and promising educational practices can be accessed from this area.

Programs and Services—Here you will find information about—and links to—NWREL’s programs and services, including training and technical assistance, educational research and development, and information on community services.

Hot Topics—Information on topics from charter schools to school reform can be found in this area.

Search NWREL—In addition to providing advanced search tips for finding exactly the right information on the NWREL site, this feature allows searches to be performed right on the home page through the mini-search feature on the left sidebar.

Links to these six major areas of NWREL’s Web site are also provided at the top of almost every page through an improved Header Navigation feature.
