December 1998 Flashback
New Program Directors—Dr. Jane Grimstad (left) was recently named Director of NWREL’s Child and Family Program. Grimstad, who joined the Laboratory staff in 1996, brings a broad range of experiences in child and family life education to her new position. In addition to classroom teaching, Grimstad has conducted community education and training programs for young children and families, designed family life education curriculum, and performed research studies on young children and families.

Dr. Kim Onn Yap (right) is the new Director of NWREL’s Comprehensive Center. Yap has been with the Laboratory since 1975, most recently serving as unit manager in the Assessment and Evaluation Program. His work has encompassed a wide variety of evaluation, assessment, and training and technical assistance activities, including program evaluation for the Comprehensive Center. Yap’s predecessor, Carlos Sundermann, has moved into the role of Director of NWREL’s new National School Safety Center.
Improving America’s Schools Conference—Student Andrew Shoals (right), a sophomore at Grant High School in Portland, introduced U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley at the Improving America’s Schools Conference in October. More than 1,100 people attended the Portland conference, which was the first of three regional fall conferences sponsored by the Department of Education. In his keynote address, Secretary Riley (left) discussed the department’s goals and initiatives for the 21st century.
