Smaller Learning Communities—NWREL Research Associate Kathleen Cotton discussed "What We Know About Implementing Smaller Learning Communities" during a stakeholder outreach session in Portland in April. More than 90 participants attended from throughout the region. Staff from the Smaller Learning Communities Team of the U.S. Department of Education described funding opportunities and school reform strategies. Contextual Teaching and Learning—Margaret Ellibee, State Coordinator, Innovative Programming and Research, Oklahoma Department of Vocational and Technical Education, spent a day in April discussing contextual teaching and learning with staff members from several NWREL programs, including Education, Career, and Community; Rural Education; and School Improvement.

New American High Schools—A training and technical assistance workshop held in Portland in April drew teams of participants from 13 high schools. Content experts included (photo on left) Laurence Peters of the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Adult and Vocational Education (standing, left), and Francie Lindner (standing, right), Research Associate with NWREL's Education, Career, and Community Program. Sharon Mousseau (seated, right), Principal of Pine Ridge High School, traveled to the workshop from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Dorna Harjo (seated, left) is a trainer with NWREL's National Mentoring Center. Eileen Warren (photo on right), Director of Organizational Development for the California Institute on Human Services, Sonoma State University, was a presenter at the New American High Schools workshop.
