Book Highlights Math, Science Trends

Depiction of Science and Mathematics Education in the Northwest: 1998, a new publication from NWREL's Mathematics and Science Education Center, compiles recent data on key factors influencing the teaching and learning of these subject areas.

Data and analyses drawn from reports produced by the Laboratory, government agencies, state departments of education, and professional associations are presented in 38 tables and 15 figures, with brief explanations accompanying each. The information is divided into five general areas:

  1. Demographic highlights of the Northwest
  2. Student participation in math and science
  3. Student achievement
  4. Teacher characteristics
  5. Teacher certification and placement

The 57-page book is designed to help educators examine regional trends in math and science education and make informed decisions about Northwest policy and practice. While these data create only a partial view of any education issue, the book points out that "statistical information can be an important component of the decisionmaking process," helping to "clarify trends and issues of importance."
