The Laboratory's annual conference for middle school educators will be held in Portland May 10-11. Sponsored by NWREL's Education and Work Program,
In the Middle '99 is designed for teachers, counselors, and administrators who want to learn more about innovative middle school programs in the Northwest and beyond. Last year's conference drew more than 400 participants from 22 states to Portland. At this year's conference:
- Indepth workshops will explore contextual learning, curriculum mapping, strategies for dealing with disruptive behavior, interdisciplinary teaching, scoring guides, and service learning
- Study tours of middle and junior high schools in the Portland area will highlight innovative approaches for engaging students in learning
- Keynote sessions will focus on community involvement in middle school reform, brain-compatible teaching and learning, and facets of high-achieving middle schools
- More than 30 conference sessions will feature a range of topics, including using technology to teach and learn, service learning in both rural and urban settings, character education, assessment of scientific inquiry, after-school programs, and more
The conference will be held at the DoubleTree Hotel at Jantzen Beach, and fees are $225 for individuals or $200 per person for groups of three or more from the same institution. Detailed registration flyers with hotel and airline information were mailed in early March. To avoid a $50 late-registration fee, register by April 19.
