April 1999 Flashback
Discovery TeamThe U.S. Department of Agriculture recently awarded a Caring for the Land Award to Washington's White Pass School District for its Discovery Team, a project that expands students' appreciation of community history, culture, and natural resources while providing them with work experiences. Pictured are (from left) Superintendent Rick Anthony, Bob Williams of the U.S. Forest Service, School-to-Work Coordinator Betty Klattenhoff, and teacher Gail Mullins.
As part of NWREL's School-Community Renewal Project, the Rural Education Program has been working with the district to develop innovative ways to sustain the community. The Winter 1998 issue of Northwest Education magazine includes more information on White Pass' school-community partnership.

Reading ConferenceMore than 250 people gathered in Vancouver, Washington, last February for NWREL's first Assessment and Evaluation Advisory Conference, which focused on increasing reading competency. Keynoter Nikki Elliot (right) shared her experiences as language arts specialist for Washington state's Commission on Student Learning. Participants (left) learned how master teachers help student readers improve skill and understanding; gained strategies for working with different kinds of readers; and met with grade-level focus groups to share promising practices and develop their own reading assessment programs. Because more than 1,000 people inquired about the limited-registration conference, a resource guide detailing conference topics will be published by NWREL later this year.
