Nov-Dec 2005 | NW REPORT

Dr. Dave Novotney, assistant superintendent of Willamette ESD, and Dr. Kathleen Hanneman, who will be working in Salem and Woodburn schools, were among several Oregon school improvement coordinators who met in Portland in September for a professional development event focused on facilitating schoolwide restructuring needed to turn around low-performing schools.

Part of the Smaller Learning Community Best Practices workshop series, was held at NWREL in September. George McKnight, at-risk coordinator for Northside Independent School District in San Antonio, worked with tools designed to help participants plan for, implement, and monitor equitable practices in curriculum, instruction, and assessment across their smaller learning communities.

Participants gathered in Portland in October for two days to explore critical issues in designing and implementing districtwide reform: developing leadership for change; high-quality teaching and learning; and using resources effectively. The conference, led by NWREL, was a joint effort of six organizations from across the United States. Researcher Margaret Grogan from University of Missouri-Columbia presents a session on leadership for change.
