SLC workshop1—Smaller Learning Communities (SLCs) grantee teams from high schools around the country attended a two-day workshop hosted by NWREL's Recreating High Schools unit. The workshop gives participants focused time to take stock of current practices, map out long-range directions for change, and plan for schoolwide improvements. Iris Tamayose and Michael Tokioka from Aiea, Hawaii, review their school's practices and plans for SLC reforms.

2, 3—Board members and Laboratory staff celebrated NWREL's 39th anniversary in June. John Pugh, Chancellor of the University of Alaska Southeast, delivers his parting speech as Board Chair. He and four other departing members of the board —Tom Farley, Steven Jacquier, Sharon Parry, and Dr. Jan Rauth—were recognized for their service to NWREL and its member institutions.

REL Performance Indicators Work Group4—Regional Educational Laboratories (REL) Performance Indicators Work Group members met at NWREL for two days in August to finalize the REL Management Information System indicators data and draft the 2005 REL Performance Indicators Report for the Institute of Education Sciences.
