Literacy Summit

1—Literacy Summit.

More than 130 teachers, administrators, and state curriculum officials from around the region attended a Portland conference on adolescent literacy sponsored by NWREL. The summit focused on incorporating reading into content areas, helping struggling readers, and engaging English language learners. According to organizer Barbara Geldersma, two days of breakout sessions dealt with everything from word study, student motivation, and research-based instructional practices to great ideas for using young adult literature in content area classes. Speakers included Thomas Bean and Helen Harper of University of Nevada-Las Vegas, Yvonne Murray of Our Lady of the Lakes University in San Antonio, and Donald Bear of University of Nevada-Reno.
