3Regional Mentoring Workshop.
Representatives of schools and community-based programs attended a workshop at the Laboratory which provided instruction on applying for U.S. Department of Education mentoring grants. The DOE will award 200 grants in 2004, totaling $50 million, to programs that target academic achievement, dropout prevention, and juvenile delinquency prevention for at-risk youth. Several different NWREL departments offered advice on what constitutes high quality mentoring programs.
4AmeriCorps*VISTA Training.
At a four-day conference, NWREL provided training to the national cadre of facilitators who prepare new recruits for the country's largest domestic anti-poverty volunteer program. A big part of the training was to equip volunteers with the skills for mobilizing resources, building sustainability, and fostering community collaborations.
