Five nationally recognized scholars will serve on the steering committee of the NWREL Educational Research Council. The new advisory group, created by the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory's Research Unit, will offer guidance on practices and priorities.
Steering committee members include Ray Barnhardt, University of Alaska Fairbanks; Bill Demmert, Western Washington University; Allen Glenn and Dan Goldhaber of the University of Washington; and Sam Stringfield, Johns Hopkins University. "We are extremely pleased to have individuals of such high caliber serving in this capacity," said Carol Thomas, NWREL's chief executive officer. "The council further enhances the Laboratory's longtime work in education research at a time when schools are relying more than ever on evidence-based practice and theory."
Council members will work with NWREL's four Centers of Excellence as both advisers and partners in specific research-related projects, according to Michael Coe, who heads NWREL's Research Unit. Coe notes that the steering committee members, nominated by NWREL board and staff, have expertise in important areas identified by the Laboratory's Picture Books assessment. Additional council members will be added by this fall, when the group holds its first meeting.
