1—Pakistani Delegation.

Pakistani Delegation
Community development, education, and government officials from Pakistan attended a two-day training at the Laboratory on effective teaching in multigrade classrooms. Through a U.S. Agency for International Development grant, the delegation spent eight weeks at Eastern Washington University and traveling around the region. Here, (left to right) Nasseer Memon, Noor Jehan, and Allah Bux Akash sample hands-on activities in a math learning corner.

2—Celebrating Lewis & Clark.

Lewis and Clark
Portland's Jefferson High School was one of 20 national recipients of trunks filled with more than $1,000 worth of scientific tools and books, to be used to study the 1805 Lewis and Clark expedition. Portland Public Schools Superintendent Jim Scherzinger (center) and Jefferson Vice Principal Karl Logan (left) accept the gift from Mike Harding of Flight of Discovery. The nonprofit group of scientists and pilots donated the trunks. NWREL's Pat Nida assisted the organization in developing curriculum and selecting schools to participate in the bicentennial activities.

3—Smaller Learning Communities.

Smaller Learning Communities
Teams from Glenville High School in Cleveland and Lakewood High School in St. Petersburg were hosted by NWREL's Center for School and District Improvement, which is helping them organize design studios for other schools interested in establishing smaller learning communities. Glenville principal Jacqueline Bell takes a tour of Southridge High School in Beaverton led by student Adam Barbay. Both Glenville and Southridge are profiled in NWREL's Schools Making Progress series.
