Tutoring Program

kidsA new video, produced by the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory, highlights four national service tutoring programs working with elementary schools. The 30-minute documentary, titled Built for Success, presents examples of good practice from AmeriCorps, AmeriCorps*VISTA, National Senior Service Corps, and Learn and Serve America programs in Oregon and Washington. "We looked for tutoring projects with strong program designs, good records of improving student achievement, and committed school support," says Rändi Douglas, who managed the production.

The video portraits delve into key characteristics of effective programs, including community connections; training and supervision; access to school resources; regular and structured sessions; and performance measurement. The production team—Nancy Henry, Nicky Martin, and Douglas—designed the documentary to train new project managers, staff, and volunteers. It's also a helpful tool for informing community stakeholders and providing collaboration models to school partners and advisory groups.
