September-October 2003 | NW REPORT
NWRELs annual conference offers research-based professional development designed to meet the needs of Northwest educators. Sessions will focus on four avenues for improving student achievement: classroom teaching and learning; school and district-level support; school, family, and community relationships; and research evaluation and assessment.
Keynote speaker Sister Anne Bryan Smollin examines humors role in enhancing learning and reducing stress. Dr. Smollin, a family counselor and author, will show us how to use humor appropriately with students. Elementary teacher Rafe Esquith will also inspire and entertain ENF participants with his troupe of Shakespearean actors from Los Angeles. These fifth-graders, many of whom are English language learners, demonstrate young peoples capacity to learn.
Graduate and professional development credits are available. NWREL member institutions can register at reduced rates via the online member page, www.nwrel.org/members. Register before January 10, 2004, for extra savings.
