1, 2, 3Education Now and in the Future 2003. More than 600 people attended ENF 2003 in Portland, where more than 75 sessions and workshops focused on “what works”—research-based best practices that can raise student achievement. Suzanne Donovan, study director for the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education at the National Academies, discussed research findings on how students learn, and how teachers can apply knowledge of the learning process in their classrooms.
2—In his keynote address, “It’s About the Kids,” Hugh Burkett, project manager at the U.S. Department of Education, highlighted disparities in achievement, course taking, and expectations in urban schools.
3—Two-time California Teacher of the Year Erin Gruwell (right) brought former students Latilla Cain and Melvin Logan to the conference to discuss the experiences chronicled in the book Freedom Writers’ Diary—How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used
4The NWREL English Language Learners (ELL) Forum followed the ENF Conference. Christine Jonsson, ESL teacher at Irving School, Bozeman, Montana, spoke about the world of the ELL learner. This forum, part of NWREL’s regional needs assessment, will help determine the ELL educational services needs of all Northwest stakeholders, from the classroom teacher to the state education agency.
