RTI Learning Community: Meeting the Needs of Significantly Struggling Learners in High Schools

Presenters
Helen Duffy,
a research analyst for AIR, serves as a Technical Assistance Liaison for the National High School Center and is a member of the Early College High School Evaluation team. She has nearly 25 years of experience in urban schools as a teacher, curriculum developer, coach, and teacher educator. Before joining AIR, she was project director for the National Academy of Education's Committee on Teacher Education where she designed a Web site that provides curricular resources for teacher educators across the country. She has particular interests in school reforms that promote equitable access to higher education, teacher learning and professional development, working conditions that promote teacher leadership, K-adult writing instruction and assessment, transitions into and out of high school, adolescent literacies, and instructional practices that support English language learners.
Dr. Duffy has a B.A. from College of the Holy Cross, an M.A. in English literature from U.C. Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in education from the Language, Literacy, and Culture division of U.C. Berkeley's School of Education. She is a teacher consultant for the Bay Area Writing Project and has served as adjunct faculty at U.C. Berkeley and Stanford University where she has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in composition and education. She is author and editor of several research reports, books, and articles and has made presentations at local and national conferences.
Jill Martin
Jill Martin has been an educator for thirty-eight years and a high school principal for the past fourteen, both in Colorado and Ohio. She is currently the Principal of Doherty High School in Colorado Springs District 11, Colorado. She was named as the 2006 Colorado High School Principal of the Year and was recently honored as the 2007 NASSP/MetLife National High School Principal of the Year. These awards reflect her commitment to collaborative leadership and successful efforts to personalize the school environment and increase literacy and academic rigor. Previous professional experiences include teaching English and special education, and serving as a team leader, dean of students and assistant and associate principal. She has conducted numerous workshops on issues and trends in public education and teaches graduate courses for the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and the University of Phoenix. She earned a bachelor's degree in secondary education and English from Monmouth University in New Jersey, a master's degree in special education from the University of Denver, and a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Northern Colorado.
Vancouver School District
Vancouver School District has been focusing on developing a system response to increase achievement for all students through a comprehensive literacy effort that addresses ESEA legislation and closing the opportunity and achievement gaps. This includes implementing a district framework and action plan to address Vancouver's Personalized Learning Model, Reading Pathway, and Connection to Academic Response to Intervention.
