Response to Intervention (RTI) is a data-driven practice for providing high-quality instruction and interventions matched to student needs. When implemented school-wide or district-wide, RTI provides a coordinated and integrated system that connects general education, remedial education, and special education. RTI has been used successfully as a proactive strategy for early identification of low achieving students.
This one and a half-day symposium, sponsored by the Northwest Regional Comprehensive Center, brought together state-level representatives from general education and special education to learn about RTI and to discuss its implications for policy and practice.
Nationally-recognized experts in the field presented research findings on RTI implementation and made recommendations for how SEAs can support school- and district-level RTI efforts. In addition, this symposium included two panel discussions. The first panel included school and district practitioners who have successfully implemented RTI models in the region. The second panel included SEA representatives from across the United States who shared their experiences and lessons learned for state-level policies and practices that support RTI. This symposium also provided opportunities for inter-state communication and targeted discussions for people with job-alike SEA roles.
