Under No Child Left Behind, states are expected to establish clear and high standards for what students in each grade should know and be able to do in mathematics. States are required to annually assess mathematics achievement of all students in grades three through eight and once in high school. States are working towards the goal of ensuring that all students are proficient by 2013-2014.

Improving Adolescent Mathematics: Findings from Research
This publication focuses on research designed to improve adolescents' learning of mathematics. It helps school leaders and faculty members work collaboratively to develop schoolwide or districtwide plans to improve math learning by incorporating research-tested practices into instruction, assessment, professional development, and school structures to support struggling learners. The intended audience includes middle and high school teachers and administrators, leadership teams, special educators, curriculum specialists, district supervisors, superintendents, and school board members, as well as parents and community members.
Math + Professional Development = A Winning Equation: Northwest Education
The focus of this issue of Northwest Education is effective math instruction with a focus on professional development. The publication examines at how Northwest teachers are examining the rigor of math classes, from introducing algebraic thinking in kindergarten to strengthening middle school geometry curriculum and tailoring math lesson to English Language Learners.
