Small Planet, Part 6
In Their Own Words:

Digging In
"We have an extremely hard-working staff. They have a positive we-can-do-it attitude. They don't wallow in 'Woe is me, we've got all these high-risk kids, what do we do?' but rather, 'OK, let's roll up our shirtsleeves and work.' There's this feeling of collaboration, of working together, that just permeates the school. They don't say, 'Oh, it's your problem.' They say, 'It's our student, and it's a difficulty for all of us. We need to work together on this.'"
—Marilyn Wycoff
School Psychologist

Going Outside the Box
Staff members credit Principal Marianne Thompson for expertly guiding the school toward excellence. Thompson led another Distinguished Title I School before coming to Roosevelt. Here are some staff comments:

  • "She's an excellent listener."
  • "She has this problem-solving ability that is a gift—the ability to see novel ways of solving problems, not being afraid to go outside the box."
  • "She's on top of everything."
  • "She knows where teachers are coming from. She's real respectful of everybody's individual style of teaching."
  • "She's open to ideas, to everyone's input."
  • It's nice knowing that no matter what happens, she's going to be there to back me up."
  • "She's there for us."
