About New Frontiers in Mentoring Training
The New Frontiers in Youth Mentoring: Partnering to Reach Across Boundaries training is hosted by the Alaska Mentoring Demonstration Project and coordinated by the National Mentoring Center. This training for mentoring professionals is designed to help programs achieve excellence by providing interactive workshops based on new and effective practices in the field of youth mentoring. This event is open to any youth mentoring professional in the U.S. A special thanks to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention for their funding and support to make this training possible.

"Dr. Mentor," Susan G. Weinberger
President Mentoring Consultant Group
Dr. Susan G. Weinberger, an international consultant on mentoring, is the founder and President of the MENTOR CONSULTING GROUP based in Norwalk, Connecticut. Susan was a pioneer in designing and developing a school-based mentoring program, the Norwalk Mentor Program in the early 1980’s and served as its Director for 12 years. The Norwalk Model has been replicated throughout the world.
Dr. Weinberger has been recognized for her expertise in establishing, maintaining, and evaluating school, corporate and community-based mentoring programs and school-to-work initiatives. These include federal contracts to establish mentoring programs on Native American reservations throughout the United States. She conducted workshops and focus groups in 1998-99 funded by HUD’s Office of Native American Programs in Albuquerque, Oklahoma City, Chicago, Anchorage, and Denver. Susan developed a program in 2001 funded by HUD in Arizona with Arizona State University, Gila River Boys & Girls Club and San Xavier Community Center. She designed and implemented a mentoring initiative in 2004 funded by the Department of Health and Human Services at 16 Boys & Girls Clubs in 7 states. This three year project has established comprehensive mentoring programs on Indian reservations. Most recently in 2005, Dr. Weinberger assisted the Red Lake Nation in Minnesota to develop a mentoring pilot initiative.
Susan received her Bachelor of Science degree in Modern Languages from Carnegie-Mellon University; a master’s degree in Elementary and Bilingual Education from Manhattanville College and her doctorate from the College of Business and Public Management at the University of Bridgeport.

Judy Vredenburgh
President and Chief Executive Officer Big Brothers Big Sisters of America
Judy Vredenburgh joined Big Brothers Big Sisters as president and chief executive officer in June 1999. She came to the nation’s preeminent youth-service organization with a proven professional track record and 29 years of management experience in both for-profit and non-profit organizations. She is the first woman to hold the organization’s top national position.
Under her leadership, Big Brothers Big Sisters has grown steadily and significantly. Today, the organization serves hundreds of thousands of children in 5,000 communities across the country, and is working toward the goal of serving one million children.

Reverend Dr. Michael James Oleksa
The Reverend Dr. Michael James Oleksa has spent the last 35 years in Alaska, serving as village priest, university professor, consultant on intercultural relations and communications, and authoring several books on Alaska Native cultures and history. A 1969 graduate of Georgetown University and of St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary, Father Oleksa earned his doctoral degree in Presov, Slovakia, in 1988. His four-part PBS television series, Communicating Across Cultures, has been widely acclaimed.
The recipient of numerous awards from local, state and federal agencies, as well as the Alaska Federation of Natives, Father Michael has taught on all three main campuses of the University of Alaska system and at Alaska Pacific University as well. He currently resides in Anchorage with his Yup’ik wife, Xenia, his daughter Anastasia and one of his three grandsons.
