Tutor Reflections
- Marcus is struggling to read may be behind his peers but has a good understanding of vocabulary
- Give him lots of reassurance and support he sometimes doubts himself
Marcus comes in looking worried and tells Abby he has a quiz tomorrow on science chapter. He explains that he's put off reading the chapter all week because the book is really hard for him and he didn't do very well on the last quiz. He looks anxious.

Abby: None of us feel good when we don't do as well as we want to on something. Let's look at your book and then talk about your assignment. Do you have it with you?
Marcus: This is the section we are supposed to be working on: The Water Cycle. Here are the pages. Now I have to read a whole chapter by tomorrow.

| Should Abby: | ||
| A. Begin reading the sections out loud to Marcus and help him take notes on the parts that are important? Taking notes is an important skill that Marcus should know. | B. Focus on the chapter headings, pictures and other aspects of the text that have less dense text passages and will require less reading? Help Marcus learn some ways to approach non-fiction text as well as help him develop some skills for studying on his own when a tutor is not available. | C. Work with Marcus on reading the text himself, helping to sound out letters and provide definitions for unfamiliar vocabulary? This will help him eventually know how to read his assignments and study on his own. |
