Making a Plan
Marcus has finished five of the eight items when time runs out. Abby lays out all the work they have done: the assignment sheet, the notes she took, and the writing he has been doing.
Abby: We've really covered a lot of your assignment and you've done more than half of the writing already. Do you see what we have left to do?
Marcus: Yes, the three at the end.
Abby: That's right, you've thought through all of your responses to the first five and now you have these last three. Do you have to do anything once you're done writing? What does your teacher expect before handing in work?
Marcus: Read over our work, and check the spelling and stuff.
Abby: I've just written down what you said as a list: Now, when you get home you can use your checklist to make sure you have covered everything. Once you finish each activity just check it off. Here's a folder you can use to hold your assignments.
Marcus: Thanks.
Abby: Be sure to bring all your books with you the next time.
Marcus: Okay.
Abby: You did a great job today: summarizing the plot, describing the characters, and thinking about your responses. This was a terrific start!
Initial assessment What just happened?
The goals of this session were to assist Marcus with his assignment and to begin the process of internalizing some organizational techniques that will help him manage his assignments and other activities in the future. Abby did the following:
- Managed their time effectively and prioritized their tasks with input from Marcus
- Asked questions to get him thinking about how to summarize chunks of information
- Gave Marcus a plan for completing the assignment on his own
