Jan involves everyone in gaining the content through humor, interactive strategies, and hands-on activities. She also assists with research in the teaching and assessment of writing. Jan relies upon research-supported best practices, and builds on 18 years teaching elementary and secondary students using the 6+1 Trait model, tutoring students, and mentoring teachers. Jan has an M.S. in education with a focus on language and literacy, as well as a National Board Certification in Early Adolescence English and Language Arts.
Jani Barker brings a quarter century of teaching experience and a passion for writing into her collaborative workshops. Having taught grades K–6 and in special education programs enables Jani to support significant connections between teachers’ daily practices and the implementation of the 6+1 trait model into their learning communities. Jani has a master’s degree in education with an early childhood endorsement. She has been a presenter for the Center for Research, Evaluation, and Assessment at NWREL for the past five years.
