6+1 Trait® Writing Introductory Institute (Grand Rapids, MI)

August 5–8, 2008

Participants of the introductory institute will:

  • Learn to formatively evaluate student writing across seven dimensions of performance: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, plus presentation
  • Practice using clearly defined rubrics to examine and score student work samples (teachers of grades 4-12)
  • Practice using the Beginning Writers and Primary Key Points scoring guides (teachers of grades K-3)
  • Develop the ability to consistently and accurately assess student writing and provide effective feedback
  • Apply knowledge of the traits to build a seamless system linking assessment and instruction
  • Build a learning community that shares a common vocabulary and vision of quality writing performance
