Grades K-2 Session

Carolyn McMahon is a high-energy, literature-loving kindergarten teacher. Having spent 16 years in education, including teaching kindergarten and first and second grades, and four years as an elementary librarian, her current passion is writing with the youngest students. Carolyn has taught across the United States, from California to Washington, D.C. Her wealth of experience, positive outlook, and wit are evident in her writing contributions and workshop presentations. Carolyn is the co-author of Wee Can(TM) Write, Wee Can(TM) Count, the newest guidebook—Wee Can(TM) Celebrate, and several other NWREL products.

Grades 3-6 Session

Jan Littlebear, Senior Program Advisor in the Center for Research, Evaluation, and Assessment at Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory, provides training in the 6+1 Trait Writing Model of Instruction & Assessment. Jan involves everyone in learning the content through humor, interactive strategies, and hands-on activities. She also assists with research in the teaching and assessment of writing. Jan relies upon research-supported best practices, and builds on 18 years of teaching elementary and secondary students using the 6+1 Trait model, tutoring students, and mentoring teachers. Jan has an M.S. in education with a focus on language and literacy, as well as a National Board Certification in Early Adolescence English & Language Arts.

Grades 7-12 session

Bev Flaten has been a classroom teacher, principal, and staff development director. She has provided 6+1 Trait writing workshops in districts around the country for NWREL for more than 10 years. Bev brings a wealth of experience, great energy, and plenty of activities to her action-packed workshops.
