Grades K-2 Number Sense and Algebraic Reasoning

Participants will explore the big ideas of number sense and algebraic reasoning at grades K-2. Instructional strategies that teachers can use to foster and support children's number sense and algebraic reasoning will be modeled and explored. Participants will learn about Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI), a philosophy of teaching young children mathematics.

Here's what some participants of the 2005 summer institute had to say:

"I have always had a strong sense and understanding of numbers. I was successful at algebraic reasoning but didn't know why... Now I do!"

"By being able to problem solve with what makes sense to me, I greatly increased my own knowledge."

"I came here with little to none (effective instructional strategies to support children's learning in number sense and algebraic reasoning) and am leaving with more than I know what to do with."

This service can be customized for:

Teachers, paraprofessionals, and principals who want to increase their understanding of K-2 mathematics. It is important for grade level teams to attend together if possible.
